The children are waiting, and still father has not returned. The hour is late they cry but father has gone to collect his debt from Sasha the gentile tailor.
The story is set at the time of the birth of chasidus in White Russia. Chaim a widower cloth merchant, raises his children, earning the respect of his friends and neighbors. Chaim tries to collect his debt, but upon seeing the futility of his attempts he decides to at least collect a portion thereof. In the heat of the confrontation, Chaim looses consciousness. Certain that he was killed, Sasha wants to bury him, but for the time being hides him in the cellar.
Chaim wakes up and finds the cellar locked. Andrea, Sasha's son who recieved lots of help from Chaim in the past helps him out of the cellar and together they run away to the forest. When Sasha finds out about the escape and the betrayal of his son, he decides to get rid of them both. At the same moment the Rabbi enters Chaims house and starts saying Tehilim with the young children...
